Cool Branding Isn’t Random. Here’s What Makes It Work.

You know when you walk into a cafe, and it just feels expensive?

The lighting. The font on the menu. Their takeaway cups. The tone of voice.

That’s not accidental. That’s intentional cafe brand design.

Think about brands like Blue Bottle Coffee versus a generic coffee chain. The difference isn’t just aesthetics. It’s clarity.

Cool branding isn’t about being trendy. It’s about cohesion.

When I work on coffee shop brand identity or restaurant branding design, here’s what actually makes it feel elevated:

1. Strategic Restraint

Not ten fonts. Two.

Not six colours, three.

Luxury branding is confident in its simplicity.

Advice I can offer, based on firsthand experience: if you think the visual elements are your final choices, cut the amount in half. I can’t express how simple a great brand identity can be. Unless this directly contradicts your brand’s founding mission, less is almost always more.

2. A Clear Personality

Are you minimal and modern? Warm and community-driven? Playful and bold?

Unique branding comes from knowing who you are, not copying what’s popular.

This info isn’t only important to you (or your designer) during the design process, but also gives you REALLY valuable insight into how you want your brand to be perceived. And brand perception is everything.

To take this one step further (I love your initiative!), I created the exact positioning document I run through with every one of my clients. This is such an integral part of my process that I had to share it!

3. A Proper Branding Kit

A real branding kit isn’t just logos.

It’s a set font hierarchy.

It’s colour systems.

It’s brand rules.

That’s what makes cafe branding look intentional across menus, signage, packaging, socials… everywhere.

If you’re collecting branding inspo but still feeling stuck, it’s probably because you need strategy, not more ideas.

I break down this thinking monthly in my newsletter, especially for founders in hospitality and product-based businesses.
