GASP is a conceptual women’s lifestyle publication providing a fresh, alternative perspective to girlhood.
Girls and Social Perspectives, or GASP for short, is all about telling the complex and multifaceted story of identity. Individual identity is described through 4 sections: culture and activism, arts, lifestyle, and mindfulness.
For the inaugural issue of GASP, design inspiration was pulled from existing women’s lifestyle publications, utilising bold typography, a bright and compelling colour palette, and story-enriching illustrations.
PROJECT SCOPE: Brand Identity, Editorial Design, Copywriting
PROJECT DURATION: Autumn 2021
TOOLS USED: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Cover Design
The intention of the magazine was to move away from the objectification of women on magazine covers. What better way to provoke thought than to put a “fake” woman on the cover, elevated on a plinth, with a spotlight on her? Society projects so many identities onto women, so when she is stripped back to her naked self, who is she really?
Section Breaks
Utilising heavy typography and QR codes, the magazine content goes beyond the printed page, immersing the reader in a multimedia reading experience.
Fashion Editorial
Serving as the primary editorial story for the magazine, this spread of designs utilises a drop cap as a design element, a curated editorial photo shoot, and further layout design to guide the reader through the story while maintaining visual intrigue.
Features and Design Assets
When viewed as a whole, these feature, structural, and decorative pages establish the visual identity of GASP, acting as the glue for the entire issue. These pages are just as important as a cover or a main spread, but are often overlooked for design elements. Because of this, I intended to make every page worth spending time on.
WHAT I LEARNED:
Working in a small group for this project, I learned the value of collaborating with differing creative backgrounds. I had the opportunity to hone my skills with the Adobe Creative Suite, and this project truly fueled my desire for design. It’s incredible to see how far my design skills have improved since this uni project over 4 years ago!
WITH MORE TIME & RESOURCES:
I would like to continue creating designs specifically for print, focusing more on impactful infographics, multimedia packages, and creating cross-platform versions of the same project.
